When you're not sure what you want in your basement, and not
really sure where to begin, it's a good idea to scour the Internet
and print magazines to see what others are doing. Another thing
to try is to create sketches of your ideas. Even if you can't
draw (I certainly can't) it will help give you an idea of what
you're looking for.
You may just be scribbling ideas, but those ideas may eventually
end up being part of your final design! Often times I'd jot ideas
down on any scrap of paper. I came up with some great ideas on
a notepad during one of those long, boring meetings at work. Here
are some sketches I made well before I even started on my basement
remodeling project. I new I'd want to build my 'dream basement'
someday... |

A sketch of the home theater area. I originally
planned to get a 70" Sony SXRD TV, and build a proscenium
to conceal ductwork. (I later decided to move
the ductwork.) I also planned to use beadboard and a chair
rail moulding on the walls. The thick vertical lines on the
walls were going to be beams or decorative pillars. I later
dropped that idea.

The top left shows how I was planning on concealing
the ductwork in the ceiling, the top right shows ideas I had
for wainscoting, beadboard, and chair rails. The bottom left
show recessed lighting layout, and the right shows trying to
figure out how big the screen could be.

Using sketches is also a great way to get the whole
family involved! If you have kids, they'll certainly spend some
time in your newly remodeled basement! Why not let them put their
ideas on paper? They may come up with things you never dreamed
of! Here's a look at a sketch my 7-year-old made showing his 'vision'
of the home theater area of the basement...
