Basement design decision: Full wall, 1/2 wall, or no wall?

See the previous topic in this sectionSee the next topic in this section

Home theater designI can't seem to make up my mind as to how one section of the basement should be. My original plan called for a 9 foot wall from the front left corner of the theater area to the first support beam. My thinking was that it would be good to break up this large open space, and to isolate the theater area from the rest of the basement. Now, I'm not so sure.

Improving home theater acoustics

It would definitely improve the acoustics in the theater by directing sound toward the main theater area, but would it look better to have it enclosed? One idea is to make it a ½ wall with a ledge and/or planter.

I could also stick with a full wall and add a bench and lighting to make a little 'cubby' for reading, TV, etc. Here's a look at a few of my home theater design ideas… (Click the images to enlarge.)

Full wall?

1/2 wall?

or no wall?

I'll need to decide soon because I'm getting near the end of the framing...
